What’s Ours

While I agree that there are far more important things to be outraged over than the Mike Pence v. Hamilton showdown, it did bring to mind something I’ve been mulling over for awhile.

Reagan used “Born in the USA” during his campaign and Springsteen asked him to stop, HW Bush was shut down from using Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy”, and most recently, Adele asked Trump to stop using her songs on the campaign trail. Every time this comes up (usually each election season), I have to laugh at the irony. And, let’s be honest, I’m also laughing because hahahaha, you got shut down, ya fuckin’ MORONS!

As for Pence at Hamilton, and Baby Donald’s hissy fit about the artfully delivered plea from the cast, I am compelled to think this:

I am sick of alt-right wingers professing any ounce of appreciation for a myriad of great art created by those they seek to oppress- music, film, paintings, Broadway shows, etc. You cannot cast out minorities, the LBGTQ community, and women and expect that the arts and entertainment world is going to accept you nonetheless. The theatre IS a safe place. Safe for those made to feel unsafe. You don’t get to be blatantly racist, awful, and dangerous and expect to be embraced by the people you cast off, SIMPLY because you like the stuff they make. You don’t get that anymore. Go get your own art. Cozy up with Scott Baio, Ted Nugent, and Kid Rock. Watch CMT all day. Your invitation has been revoked. Go see what a world is like without the people you shun. Drink that in. Artists bring color to life and make an otherwise confounding and sometimes terrifying world more bearable. The best artists use their gifts to call out injustice. And right now, that means you.

Of course, that’s just something I’m compelled to think.

In reality, I’m aware that the best art changes things. And sometimes, it changes minds.

Be careful about assigning to the alt-right those who have nothing to do with it. You actually help the alt-right grow when you do that, by associating larger movements with their very very small corner of the world. The alt-right has a specific belief that separates it from everyone else. My guesstimate is that 99% or Republican voters (fyi, I am not a Republican voter) have no idea what that belief is, or care about it. I also guess that 99% of Democrat voters have no idea what that belief is, though they probably would care about it.

By calling Pence alt-right, you give the alt-right way more prominence that it actually has. (I get that you don’t think Pence has any prominence or should or whatever.) Pence has some beliefs I find repugnant. But none of those are the particular belief that makes the alt-right the alt-right.

Just some wonderfully unimportant unsolicited advice.
